Circumcision critics champion condoms, not cutting, to combat HIV

Those travelling past the San Francisco LGBT Community Center last Wednesday evening may have caught a glimpse of signs denouncing infant circumcision and challenging the claim that male circumcision protects men from HIV. Bay Area Intactivists, a human rights group opposed to forced genital cutting, organized the demonstration which took place prior to a panel discussion on global issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS and the human rights of gay men.

The American Academy of Pediatrics intends to release an updated Circumcision Policy Statement on Monday, August 27. Rather than discouraging doctors and parents from subjecting infant boys to non-therapeutic circumcision, an unnecessary surgery which violates a child's most basic of human rights to bodily integrity, the updated statement makes allegations that there are health benefits that justify amputating normal, healthy, erogenous tissue from non-consenting minors.

But instead of encountering praise and autograph requests, they were met with protesters from the group Bay Area Intactivists who condemned the authors for using Tinderbox to extol male circumcision.
