Although girls in the United States have been protected by Federal law from forced genital cutting since 1997, boys and intersex children continue to be denied equal rights to genital integrity.

Each year in the United States, approximately one million healthy children are subjected to forced genital cutting such as routine infant circumcision and sex-normative surgery. Besides violating these victims' human right to bodily integrity, these damaging surgeries also violate medical ethics since they are both unnecessary and performed without the patient's consent.

Pediatrician conference provokes anti-circumcision protest

Whether or not medical advances were a topic of discussion at the 46th Annual Advances and Controversies in Clinical Pediatrics conference is uncertain but the three-day event in San Francisco certainly attracted its share of controversy. A group of protesters from the group Bay Area Intactivists assembled outside the conference venue while carrying signs calling infant circumcision "medical fraud" and doctors who perform the surgery "sex criminals." Some of the activists wore white body suits with faux-bloodstained crotches which turned many heads along the bustling city streets.

Circumcision critics champion condoms, not cutting, to combat HIV

Bay Area Intactivists, a human rights group opposed to forced genital cutting, organized the demonstration which took place prior to a panel discussion on global issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS and the human rights of gay men.
